James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis share the elements of their characters that they found most intriguing and complement each other while discussing their different approaches to the craft. The story is inspired by the experiences of Christian Tafdrup, director of the original Danish film Speak No Evil (2022), who had befriended a Dutch couple while on holiday in Tuscany with his wife. Although the Dutch were a bit socially awkward, the two couples got along very well, and after returning home, Tafdrup received an invitation from the Dutch family to come to the Netherlands. He briefly considered it, but decided that it would feel weird to stay with people he didn’t really know; his story for the film was born when he indulged in his darkest fantasies about what might have happened if he had accepted (while maintaining that the original Dutch couple had never given off any bad vibes). In this remake, the nationalities of the two families have been changed to American and British. In the bathroom, while washing his eye, he has a subconjunctival haemorrhage in his left eye, in his next scene his eyes are perfectly clear. Ben Dalton: Why are you doing this to us? No pun intended – if you’ve seen the European original (which isn’t even 2 years old) you might understand what I’m trying to convey. To see this film, it probably makes sense not to have seen it – one might think! Yet, watching it (and it mostly seems to stick to the plan), this movie seems to try to “fix” things that some people didn’t like about the original… the son being one of those things… illness can be hard to deal with… your situation makes you lose your passion… or could make you lose it. Not here – and that elevates the movie. Same goes for James McAvoy… he really is the heart of the movie. His performance is subtle and excellent at the same time. I don’t remember every little aspect of the original and I don’t want to offend the original actors… so let’s just say he’s great in this movie. The acting and storyline work very well overall, with a few twists thrown in… although the changes at first may not seem like that big of a deal… but in the end (literally) we get something different… for better or worse! I like it – 1) because it’s different from the original and 2) because it’s more suited to the movie and the characters it has to offer! I was skeptical, but it’s just as good as the original… for different reasons! Don’t throw stones at me… The final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month. Check out our October schedule for more!
